During Knull’s invasion and the events leading up to the King in Black saga, the Symbiote God proved to be an nearly unstoppable force. With All-Black the Necrosword at his disposal, Knull dismantled countless opponents and heroes throughout his conquest of the cosmos.
Fortunately, Eddie Brock returned to put an end to the terror once and for all. The pivotal moment occurred in King in Black #5, where Eddie took the first step toward victory by disarming Knull of his favorite weapon.
The Turning Point: Eddie’s Cosmic Ascent
Before the Avengers and X-Men could provide any backup to the Silver Surfer in the final battle against Knull, a newly returned and cosmically powered Venom arrived to handle the situation himself. Knull was unimpressed by the return of a host and entity he had previously killed. However, Knull failed to account for the fact that Eddie had been blessed by the legendary God of Light, known as the Enigma Force or Captain Universe.
The Destruction of the Necrosword
As the Dark God stood his ground with the All-Black in hand, Eddie reached out and summoned both Thor’s hammer, Mjolnir, and a massive sword forged from the Silver Surfer’s board. Eddie merged the two into a massive axe—resembling his own iconic emblem—and pursued the fleeing Knull. Upon catching up to him, Venom destroyed the All-Black by barely touching it.
While the sword had lost some of its power after its connection to the deceased Celestial, Knowhere, was severed, the fact that Eddie single-handedly destroyed one of the most powerful ancient symbiotes with such little effort was a shocking feat.
The Dark Legacy of All-Black
Beyond being wielded by Knull, the All-Black had fallen into many hands over the years, and it never ended well for its temporary owners, even in their moments of victory. While its origins were dark, its history proved it was as dangerous as Knull himself.
- Gorr the God Butcher: First appearing in 2012’s Thor: God of Thunder #2 by Jason Aaron and Esad Ribic, the All-Black came into the possession of Gorr the God Butcher. Gorr seized the weapon from an incapacitated Knull following the god's first defeat at the hands of the God of Light.
- A Trail of Destruction: During Gorr’s killing spree across the universe, the Necrosword ended the lives of countless gods from every pantheon.
- Galactic Infection: When Gorr brought the sword to the far future, he utilized the Necrosword to construct his own artificial world at the edge of space—a world that eventually infected the mighty Galactus before nearly bringing the entire universe to an end.
Conclusion: A Weapon for the Ages
All-Black may be a creation of Knull rather than a direct extension of his power, but it remains one of the most potent weapons to ever exist in any corner of the Marvel Universe. While its destruction did not last indefinitely, it served as a much-needed relief for Marvel’s heroes and effectively signaled the beginning of the end for Knull.
Though it may not have the universal reach of the Infinity Gauntlet, the Necrosword remains an impressively powerful weapon capable of spilling an immense amount of blood. Its legacy remains one of the most feared chapters in Marvel history.
